Globalization
Rusty Dodson
The United States of America is trying desperately to hold onto political and economical ideals that are far out dated. The population is far larger and globalization is only going to progress forward. At one time economics that were designed around the upper one percent may have been somewhat effective, using the upper one percent as an umbrella population, which gave us “trickle down economics”. Today the population has grown too large and the market too diverse. Our economy is no longer just national.
Globalization however is not the devil so many people seem to think it is. In fact globalization is the only way to truly secure peace and stabilize the economy. If all nations, or at least developed nations thought in a global sense they would likely think twice about terrorism or other events that could deflate their own local economy.
The fact is that events that happen in South America, China and other nations do in fact have a large impact on our own economy and even our own environment. South American oil for instance plays a role, albeit smaller than the middle east, but still a roll in our fuel prices. South American rain forests play a role in air quality for many nations. When tourism drops in places like Europe, Australia and other popular destinations it also means a drop in American dollars spent. If one plans a 2 week stay in Japan they are going to buy travel items here in the US, some of those items will be made in China. It is a global chain.
The global chain can also lead back to American jobs, if globalization is supported and nurtured labor costs will stabilize. If labor isn't dirt cheap in places like India and China American corporations will have less incentive to send our American jobs over seas. This will also lead to humanitarian efforts in those slightly less developed countries due to higher wages and a more stable government. Corporate America is currently against this type of smart economical planning. Corporate America is still thinking in out dated terms of get rich now, forget tomorrow. Fair labor can mean slightly lower profits, however a poor economy leads to even lower profits. Give Americans quality jobs and Americans will spend quality dollars!
We are currently working with an attitude of “America Number One” and forget those that disagree or suggest fault. This is a flawed outlook. The honest truth is if we want America to stay the greatest country to live in we have to be considerate of other countries as well and try to maintain good relations. This America against the world attitude will only lead to our own downfall. America is the greatest place to live largely because products we purchase and sell from and to other nations. If the current trend of other nations loosing respect and interest in America it will eventually lead to a decline in American product popularity and willingness to sell to us with fair rates. Many economists assume this will never happen because other nations simply can not afford to loose its number one “client” however if the American dollar continues to decline and other economies continue to grow the US could certainly loose some of its bargaining power. The US is not an isolated self-contained island; we absolutely depend on foreign products and support.
As with all my Random Ramblings, this is an ongoing thought process that will grow and develop as time goes by.
